Innovator Mr. S Sagayaraj hails from Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu.  He has  studied up to 9th standard. Due to his father's death and poor economic background, he started working as daily wages and step by step he became a civil contractor. 

Purpose
Mr. S Sagayaraj has developed a mini tractor for light-duty ploughing operations. 

Technical details
It is a lightweight 6 hp (Lombardini) three-wheel tractor for shallow ploughing in farmlands. A belt drive is engaged to transfer the power from the engine to gearbox and again a chain and sprocket power transmission are used to transmit the power from the gearbox to ideal gearbox which transmits the power to the crown wheel with the help of chain drive transmission. The crown wheel supplies the final power transmission to the rear wheel individually through chain and sprocket mechanism. Two independent drum brakes are provided in both rear wheels. Since the power transmission system is through gears and chain drive this tractor can be inclined up to 45-degree angle on travel. A screw jack is provided in the three-point linkage for the adjustment of cultivators in the field and for the depth control. The C wheels are provided in order to reduce fuel consumption.

Benefits
According to Mr. S Sagayaraj, it is suitable for optimum depth of ploughing i.e. 6-8 inch. The equal weight distribution of tractor and power transmission through the chain and sprockets facilitates the tractor stability even in travelling 45-degree inclination. The power transmission through a chain drive system facilitates high pulling effort without wheel slippage. Since the turning radius will be lesser as compared to the four-wheel tractor, it is more suitable for intercultural operation in row crop cultivation.
